Africa Space Works (ASW) is a NewSpace company developing advanced space technologies, embedded systems, FPGA platforms, and software solutions. We are looking for an experienced Senior FPGA & Embedded Systems Engineer to lead the design and development of FPGA and embedded solutions for next-generation space systems.

Role Overview

As a Senior FPGA & Embedded Systems Engineer, you will design, develop, integrate, and validate FPGA and embedded solutions. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, work directly with customers to translate technical requirements into engineering solutions, and provide technical leadership while ensuring projects are delivered on time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize FPGA-based digital systems using Verilog, VHDL, or SystemVerilog.
  • Define FPGA architectures and develop reusable IP for embedded applications.
  • Develop and integrate embedded systems, firmware, and hardware interfaces.
  • Perform simulation, verification, debugging, validation, and performance optimization of FPGA designs.
  • Collaborate with software, hardware, and systems teams to ensure seamless hardware/software integration.
  • Lead technical meetings, design reviews, and customer discussions.
  • Translate customer requirements into reliable engineering solutions.
  • Support project planning, risk assessment, and technical delivery.
  • Prepare technical documentation, design specifications, and engineering reports.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes and R&D initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in FPGA and embedded systems development.
  • Strong experience with Verilog, VHDL, or SystemVerilog.
  • Experience with FPGA development tools such as Microchip Libero SoC, AMD Vivado, or Intel Quartus.
  • Strong understanding of digital design, embedded systems, and hardware/software co-design.
  • Experience with simulation and verification tools such as ModelSim or QuestaSim.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and experience using Python for scripting and automation.
  • Experience with Git, collaborative development workflows, and customer-facing engineering activities.
  • Excellent analytical, debugging, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SoC FPGA platforms and Linux-based embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, and collaborative project management.
  • Experience in aerospace, satellite, or other safety-critical industries.
  • Experience leading technical reviews, mentoring engineers, and driving engineering decisions.
