About Africa Space Works

Africa Space Works (ASW) is a NewSpace company developing innovative Earth observation solutions for environmental monitoring, infrastructure analysis, and space technologies across Africa.

We leverage satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, and geospatial analytics to build operational products that transform Earth observation data into actionable intelligence. We are looking for a passionate R&D Computer Vision Engineer to join our Space AI team and contribute to the development of next-generation AI solutions for Space.

Role Overview

As an R&D Computer Vision Engineer, you will design and develop AI solutions that extract meaningful insights from multi-source geospatial and space data.

You will work on computer vision, deep learning, and data fusion techniques by combining satellite imagery and geospatial datasets with complementary datasets such as GIS layers, weather data, sensor measurements, and other geospatial information. Your mission is to build robust, scalable, and reproducible AI pipelines that support operational space applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop AI and computer vision solutions for Earth observation and space applications.
  • Build data fusion pipelines combining satellite imagery with geospatial, sensor, and auxiliary datasets.
  • Develop deep learning models for object detection, segmentation, image classification, change detection, depth estimation, and related computer vision tasks.
  • Develop reusable datasets, annotation workflows, benchmarking protocols, and evaluation frameworks.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to integrate research into production-ready systems.
  • Produce clear technical documentation and communicate research findings.

Requirements

  • M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in Python; experience with C++ is a plus.
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow and Hugging Face.
  • Solid understanding of computer vision, image processing, and deep learning fundamentals.
  • Experience with Git and collaborative software development workflows.
  • Familiarity with OpenCV, NumPy, SciPy, and other scientific Python libraries.
  • Knowledge of GIS concepts, remote sensing, or geospatial data processing is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and scientific curiosity.
  • Excellent technical writing, documentation, and communication skills.
  • CUDA
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC)

Good to Have

  • Experience before as a computer vision or AI engineer.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms, Docker, or Linux environments.
  • Knowledge of Rust for developing high-performance AI or computer vision applications is a big advantage.
  • Experience deploying AI models into production or building MLOps pipelines.

What You Will Work On

Depending on current R&D priorities, you may contribute to projects involving:

  • Satellite image understanding
  • Data Fusion
  • Geospatial AI
  • Large-scale satellite dataset engineering
  • AI benchmarking and model evaluation
  • Production-ready Space AI systems

What We offer

  • Competitive salary package.
  • Comprehensive health insurance.
  • Opportunities for international exposure and collaboration.
  • Continuous learning, training, and career development.
  • Hands-on experience working on real-world projects and cutting-edge Space AI technologies.
  • A collaborative and innovative R&D environment where your ideas can make an impact.
